Powder coating:
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder.
The powder may be a thermoplastic or a thermoset polymer.
The coating is typically applied electrostatically then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin."
It is typically used to create a hard finish that is much more durable than conventional paint.
Powder coating can be used as a decorative and/or functional coating, depending on the application, and is primarily applied to steel, aluminum or magnesium.
Newer technologies allow other materials, such as MDF (medium-density fibreboard) to be powder coated using different methods.
Products and industries that require powder coating:
- Automotive:
- Exterior: trim, moldings and luggage racks
- Interior: seat tracks, seat belt height adjusters, window trim
- Under-hood/under-chassis: fuel filler pipes, steering tubes, trailer hitch assemblies
- Marine: boat railings, swim platforms, hoists
- Office Furniture: desks, chairs, shelving, cabinets
- Lawn Furniture: wrought iron, steel and aluminum tables, chairs, fencing
- Motorcycle/Bicycle: frames, fenders, forks, swing arms and rims
- Hunting Equipment: tree stands, ladders
- Sporting Equipment: weight benches, exercise equipment, soccer goals, basketball poles, hockey nets
- General Fabrication: any other applications where a more robust coating is required compared to conventional liquid paint
